When my two children went into respite care for the weekend, sometimes we would take the opportunity to go away and have a real break (this was back in the days when we both worked and could afford to regularly book in at a motel!!)
There was one spot we discovered that was a great place for us to feel relaxed in. The accomodation consisted of simple cottages surrounded by beautifully kept gardens with a path that wound its way down to the sea. No traffic. No noise. No worries.
It was something that we discovered we had in common a number of years into our marriage – the pleasure and peacefulness of being in nature, surrounded by green, lush vegetation.
I wondered why we couldn’t try to re-create something of this atmosphere in our own back yard if it was something we both appreciated and enjoyed so much? That was when we began in earnest to design and establish our own garden instead of the meagre offerings left by the former house-owner. We found the process and results to be so rewarding!
At about the same time we decided to resurrect the vegetable patch. Again, it gave us so much pleasure to plant and pick our own produce.
A couple of years ago we shifted house, leaving behind all of our gardening endeavours. So, we are starting again. Its not sad – its exciting. We can’t afford big plants, so we buy small, and enjoy watching the garden slowly transform. The vege patch is the next step. A potager with a kiwi twist. Watch this space!!!
I am watching keenly! I see there’s much for me to learn – what’s a potager????

I’m sure you’ve probably googled “potager” by now…. but, in brief, it’s a fancy kitchen garden, where you plant veges, herbs and flowers together. Often using raised beds, sometimes with nice little paths around, maybe hedges, usually to look nice. Seeing as my “potager” is right by the front door, I wanted it to look nice.

oh, sounds pretty and very practical, i like (and no, i was up far too late last night to google as well!) so that would be edible flowers in there I take it?

You can do the edible flower thing, but also plant flowers that help keep pests away (esp if you are into organic gardening), or some flowers and/or herbs can be benefitial to veges from a nutrient point of view (companion planting) – so I’ve read, but haven’t done anthing about!! Also, of course, some herbs have pretty flowers (rosemary as you well know, etc) Having said all of this, I’ve already planted some flowers that serve no function whatsoever – purely for looks…

Yeah right! Although I guess I did grow up enjoying gardens – my parents were both keen gardeners. So in some ways it did all start a long time ago…
